My feedback may have been phrased more negatively than I meant it to be, but what I was trying to constructively criticise is that TagJag would be a lot more unique and valuable to me if beyond merely listing the results pages of the different services it aggregates, it presented the results interesting and timesaving ways. For example: be_tter categorization of time-based vs. authority-based sources; combining different results into a single list; de-duping and filtering results; filtering the spam that the different providers seem to be unable to catch; providing different notification thresholds and mediums beyond RSS and HTML, like email, SMS, IM. aeBay SMS Alert: If you have ever used eBay and have lost an item to another fellow bidder because you were either too lazy or just did not remember to check your bid, you might also have noticed that eBay provides an SMS alert service to its customers. They promise to alert you via SMS when you are outbid on your auction. However, they charge 25 cents per item for this service. I wrote a small script that does just that and would like to share it with everyone.

This is itch and scratch software and has been only tested with my phone and my small list of items. I am at the mercy of eBay and will have to limit the number of alerts on queue. Things might and probably will break, so please use at your own risk. I am not responsible for damages and/or charges on your phone. I assure you that the information from this script is not stored for longer than the auction or you are outbid, whichever comes first.

Now that the boring stuff is out of theb way, here is how I use it. Find an item on eBay that you would like to bid on. Bid on it. Then come back to the script and provide your eBay username, the item number, your cell phone number and the cell phone service that you use. The script checks your auction item once every twenty minutes and if it finds that you have been outbid, it sends you an SMS message telling you the next bid amount and the ending time for the auction. Enjoy!

Most of my time lately has been tied up with my day job. We've had some big projects on tight deadlines, and we developers had to really push to get things done on schedule. I've had to work late at the the office several times in the past few weeks, and that throws off our schedule for getting home projects done.

At home, we've been trying to finish building the rest of our bedroom funiture (we've almost finished the final piece, a wardrobe). And we still need to finish stripping and repainting the dressers for the girls' room. We're also trying to get things cleaned up in general, in preparation for out-of-town family visitors for Independence Day weekend. We're going to have a very crowded house, with lots of kids to wrangle. If you don't hear from me again after July 4th, it might mean that we didn't survive.

And I'm not the only one who's bn sucked into a swirling vortex of job and home projects, with little-to-no time for participating in blogdom. I've managed to keep up with most of the latest memes, and I've added a few new del.icio.us bookmarks, but there's been no opportunity to develop any nifty code or write about the subject of the day.

I've got eight draft posts in my queue, and three of those are no longer timely, and so I'll probably end up deleting them. Of the remaining five, one is about how to use the WordPress object cache in plugins, another is about separation of presentation from business logic in HTML::Mason (a mod_perl web framework), one is an explanation of what blog ping services are, and the last two are non-technical. The ping service post is the only one that I've actually written any content for, and I started writing that one nearly a year ago. If you’re interested in attending a WordPress meetup in NYC, then someone’s going to have to take charge:

      1. Sign up as an organizer by clicking the Start a Meetup link on the NYC WordPress Meetup page.

      3. Find a good place to host the meetup

A couple of years ago, when we moved to the Atlanta area, I was working as a contractor doing some web programming on a project that I couldn't say much about, because I had signed an NDA. But now I can talk, because the product is officially released (actually, I suppose I could have talked about it back when it was in beta). That product is ViaList.

      ViaList ie-mail.

A program that helps you make and share lists may not sound like a big deal, but when you actually use the software and see how intuitive it is, you could very well end up adding it to your list of favorite tools. I often see new utilities come onto the scene for the Mac and think, "I wish there was something like that for Windows." This is one of those rare programs that turns the tables, and could have Mac users wishing they had ViaList (there are plans to make a Mac client, eventually).

A lot of what I worked on was on the system administration side, configuring the server for email, setting up the bug tracker, creating a "single sign-on" system, etc. But I also worked on a very early proof-of-concept for the web-based list interface. Oh, and with me being a WordPress dev, the site ended up using WP for its blog.

Susan and I have used it to maintain lists of projects around the house, shopping lists, and plann7:{s:5:"title";s:24:"Dougal Campbell: ViaList";s:4:"guid";s:49:"http://dougal.gunters.org/blog/2006/06/29/vialist";s:4:"link";s:49:"http://dougal.gunters.org/blog/2006/06/29/vialist";s:11:"description";s:2149:"

ViaList is software that helps your club, group, committee, or family stay organized and up-to-date. It lets you share any kind of list — things to do, contact information, agendas, ideas, whatever you need — as easily as sending an hat does just that and would like to share it with everyone.

Now that the boring stuff is out of the way, here is how I use it. Enjoy!

Now that the boring stuff is out of thes trying to constructively criticise is that TagJag would be a lot more unique and valuable to me if beyond merely listing the results pages of the different services it aggregates, it presented the results interesting and timesaving ways. For example: better categorization of time-based vs. authority-based sources; combining different results into a single list; de-duping and filtering results; filtering the spam that the different providers seem to be unable to catch; providing different notification thresholds and mediums beyond RSS and HTML, like email, SMS, IM. All of these would provide value to me beyond what the individual services provide, save me time, and provide something greater than the sum of its parts. tagjag freedbacking

Bug Independence Day is July 4th! To help shake the bugs out of the upcoming 2.0.4 and 2.1 releases, we're holding a Bug Hunt next week. We'll be finding and fixing bugs and cleaning up the bug tracker. All are welcome to join us in the #wordpress-bugs IRC channel as we go on the hunt. We'll get things started at Midnight between Tuesday, July 4, 2006 and Wednesday, July 5, 2006 San Francisco time and keep going for 24 hours or until everyone gets tired. We'll have folks keepng vigil at all hours so drop by at whatever time is convenient to you.

All you need to help out is the ability to install and run WordPress, folks of all skill levels are invited to join. We need people testing as much as we need people coding. (If not a little more.)
